Ursula von der Leyen ‘risks triggering a global vaccine trade war’ | Analysis



Ursula von der Leyen has threatened to seize factories, waive patents and ban vaccine exports to the UK unless Boris Johnson surrendered British coronavirus jabs to the EU.

The approach could spell trouble for the UK if she gets support from EU leaders at next week’s summit, according to The Telegraph’s Europe Editor James Crisp.

“If EU leaders think that this is too aggressive a move… things may calm down,” he explains in the video above.

“If they don’t – or EU leaders decide that some vaccine nationalism would be a very convenient distraction from their troubles in the vaccine rollout – then we could be in for a very bumpy ride.”

He added: “Ursula von der Leyen risks triggering a global vaccine trade war in order to secure more doses of a vaccine people don’t necessarily want.”
